The Board of Directors and Executive host board meetings three times a year to review past and upcoming events, provincial reports and any other business related to CCSTA and Catholic education in Canada. Following are the highlights from the February 12, 2024 meeting and 2024 Lobby Day.
Justice James Higgins Award
The Board is excited to announce that Julian Hanlon is this year’s recipient of the prestigious Justice James Higgins Award. Prior to joining CCSTA as Executive Director, Mr. Hanlon served the Ottawa Catholic School Board for 36 years as teacher, vice-principal, principal, supervisory officer, deputy director and Director of Education. The award is given annually to an individual or group who have made an outstanding contribution to Catholic education in Canada.
Mr. Hanlon will be recognized and celebrated during CCSTA’s 2024 Conference Gala Banquet on Saturday, June 1. Further details on his achievements will appear in a subsequent CCSTA newsletter and in the 2024 AGM/Convention program.

Government Relations
This year’s Lobby Day took place on February 13th. The Board of Directors were delighted to have the opportunity to pursue dialogue and inform ten Ministers and Members of Parliament (MPs) from constituencies across the country about the value of Catholic education and the impact it has on the fabric of Canadian society. Virtual meetings with additional MPs who were unable to accommodate in-person meetings will occur later this month.
Communications
- The 2023 / 2024 Toonies for Tuition material has been updated with a new theme and has been promoted on social media and our newsletter.
- The French version of the Toonies for Tuition Video will be uploaded to YouTube by the end of February 2024.
- Fr. Penna’s short video clips on Catholic education will be posted regularly on each of our platforms.
- CCSTA has begun a member highlight series, beginning with British Columbia in December. The goal is to feature each association before summer break.
Audited Financial Statements
The auditor’s report and financial statements were received by the board for review at the AGM. In 2023, CCSTA incurred a deficit of $14,373.
New Board Member
CCSTA would like to welcome its newest Director, Kelly Whalen (Alberta, Northwest Territories, Yukon). Kelly has served as a trustee on the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Schools and Holy Family Catholic School Boards in Alberta for 20 years. We are grateful to have Kelly step forward to serve Catholic education at the national level.
